put it on our tab

paige's 4-foot fall in august...grant's split chin last month...paige's purple toe...paige's shopping cart turnover...and now the hole in grant's scalp. we might as well just keep a running tab going at urgent care. bad enough that the woman behind the desk recognized us when i brought grant in yesterday with a badly bleeding head.

he was at his sports class, taking a water break. holding onto the chain link fence with one hand and balancing on a small basketball with his feet. in a split second his feet went out from under him and he came straight down, back of the head first, on a big steel bolt that was sticking straight up from the connector on the fence. he jumped right up, "i'm ok! i'm ok!" but started crying pretty quickly. i looked and just saw a hole in the back of his scalp, under his hair, bleeding badly. off to urgent care...after promising him that he could pick out any toy he wanted from CVS afterward, of course.

once there, the doctor takes a look and says to me, "well, we can either put a few stitches in it, or we can glue it." grant yells, "I WANT THE GLUE!!!" so they cleaned him up, glued him up, and we were off to CVS where he picked out a hot wheels racetrack set.

i'm starting to question my parenting skills. at what point do you have to stop letting a kid be a kid in the name of safety? balancing on a basketball...i've done it a billion times. it's what kids do. riding on the back of shopping carts. it's what kids do. running along pulling a wagon behind you (this is what split grant's chin open last month). it's what kids do. i guess i just need to be thankful that we're all learning these little lessons about personal limits without any serious damage...yet.

You and Greg are great parents. You have to let kids do what kids do. I don't remember you balancing on a basketball, but I can see you doing it in my mind. If you try to keep kids from getting hurt - an impossible task btw - then you also keep kids from experimenting with life and growing up to be creative and productive members of society. And little persons you will be so proud of for who they are.
