grant the sports junkie

as promised, a little post about grant who is RIDICULOUSLY addicted to sports right now. he has actually started waking up about 30 minutes earlier than he used to, just to get his fix. he pops out of bed at like 6:15am and immediately runs into our room to ask what the dodgers/lakers score was last night.

"DAD! dad! wake up! did the dodgers win last night?"
to which greg, who's usually gone to bed less than 4 hours ago, answers, "humph" and rolls over.
"what dad? what? how much did they win by? did they win? dad, where's your iphone so i can see the scores???"

it's painful. but also pretty cool. he loves watching games, sitting transfixed on the couch, cheering loudly when things go our way and yelling "oh man!" if the giants hit a home run. of course he prefers the dodgers or lakers, but if they're not on, any old team will do. "mom, can i watch basketball?" and then he'll choose which team he wants to win (based on mascot or city or - most often - whoever's winning at the time) and he will cheer that team like it's in his blood. "mom!!! can you believe the timberwolves won??? i can't believe it! it's so awesome! i totally wanted them to win!"

on the other hand, this obsession with scores and this fierce competitiveness is a bit of handicap at times - especially on the soccer field lately. we've had a few recent games where he'll break down in angry tears when the other team scores (something that never used to happen), and this past game he actually refused to shake the other team's hands at the end of the game (even though they tied 1-1) which of course is not acceptable. ever.

we need to settle the score.
