wow - now that was a hiatus. and because i'm too stressed out by the idea of reviewing everything that's happened in the past couple of months, i'm just going to pretend i recorded all of it in its sunny, sticky, silly glory and move on to today.
today was a proud day for me. not because my kids were on good behavior at church (they were) or because grant let paige play with his light-up dolphin toy to ease her crying (he did) or because we've officially packed up our entire house and moved to oma's house for the remodel (we did)...but because my 5 1/2 year old boy walked up to a group of older kids playing basketball and asked if he could play, too. and then he completely held his own. they went easy on him at first, until they realized this kid could shoot. at one point the boy who was guarding grant started to sweetly mock him for being smaller. grant answered with a swift swish. (and truly the older kids were so sweet and really took care of him, and got on eachother if they knocked him down.)
but it wasn't his shots that made me smile. it was just the pure outgoing boyness of the moment. the way he first noticed them playing through the window; the way he paused there momentarily, longing but unsure; the way he slowly opened the front door and hovered in that dusk between total confidence and utter terror; the way he stepped cautiously forward, and found strength in that first step to take the next, until there he was with the basketball in his hands and his blue eyes shining with pride.
it's a proud, proud moment when you realize that your kid is his very own person, and can hold his own, and make his own way.
swish.
