when i grow up...

$#*&@! blogger won't let you see it right now, but i have a great video of grant at his magic rainbow graduation in june. he walks up to the microphone in front of literally 100+ parents and grandparents and kids and says, "hi. my name is grant gilmer, and when i grow up i want to be a marine biologist so i can help the animals." at which time he holds up triumphantly a wonderful drawing of him scuba diving with whales and sharks and fish. applause erupts. he smiles his widest grin, turns to walk back to his seat and does this amazing arm pump. you really gotta see it to get the full effect, but you'll have to take that up with blogger.

so i've got my marine biologist (who sometimes refers to his future profession as "barine biologist" and god speed to anyone who tries to correct him), and i've got my paigey, who says she wants to be a mermaid when she grows up.

what's interesting - at least to me - is that i used to have the exact same aspirations. carrie age 5-10 wanted to be a mermaid (so much so that my mom sewed me a mermaid "tail" out of green swimsuit material that i would wear in our backyard jacuzzi, and, when i was feeling really bold, at the badminton and country club pools. yep. you're right. i was super cool.). flash forward a few years and carrie age 12-16 wanted to be a marine biologist.

as "the apple never falls too far from the tree," i guess i shouldn't be too surprised by my kids' goals, but i'm still waiting on the day that paige echoes 8-year-old greg and says she wants to be a black football player.
